RCMBA KIDS SHINES AGAIN!

GIAN KARLO DAPUL TOPS INT'L ESU SPEECH COMPETITION

PP Santi's son, Gian Karlo, an incoming senior at the Phil. Science High School, (proudly an RCMBA Rotaractor!) is the overall winner in the English Speaking Union (ESU) International Public Speaking Competition in London last May 8 - 9, 2008.  Gian is the official ESU Philippines representative after winning the local ESU competition last April 7, 2008 at UP Diliman.

London, May, 9 2008 (by proud Dad, Santi Dapul) - Gian is the overall winner in the ESU International Public Speaking Competition here in London that was attended by 58 contestants from 35 countries.

The first heat held at Dartmouth House was actually the most difficult with 14 other participants from the US, UK, Netherlands, Australia, India, Hongkong, Pakistan and China. Gian was the first speaker. The other winner in the first heat is a young woman from China followed very closely by Netherlands and Australia according to the lady Judge who is a Theatre Director, BBC Producer and President of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute.

The finals held at the US Embassy had the following participants; Romania, Thailand, Poland, Bulgaria, Argentina, Lebanon, China and the Philippines. This time, Gian was the last speaker.

I think Gian won the judges unanimous vote for his very excited but relaxed and funny delivery. His speech is also more substantive with a very clear message. He also gave very good answers to the questions the audience asked him. The finalists were all very good with contrasting styles and messages.

The second place winner is a young woman from Thailand, not much for her delivery, but for her strong defense of her message that the young should avoid pre-marital sex. Third place winner is from Bulgaria whose message is simply promoting the use of bicycles instead of cars. In the audience vote, a young man from Argentina won for his very funny speech. All others were excellent speakers but their messages were not too clear or focused with a lot of generic motherhood statements.

Gian will receive his formal award at the Buckingham Palace in November, presumably with the Duke of Edinburgh - Prince Philip - and hopefully Queen Elizabeth as this is the 90th Anniversary of ESU.

Our sincere thanks to all those who helped and prayed for this triumph of the Philippines. The Filipino, is after all, above world class.
