RY 2003 - 2004

Rachel "Chel" Ocampo

"Here is the magical legend of King Arthur, retold through the eyes of the women who wielded power from behind the throne… from beyond the mists, in the land of Avalon, where women rule as the creators of life and keepers of knowledge."

- from Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “The Mists of Avalon”

After being mortally wounded by Mordred, Arthur was taken to Avalon, a hidden land of healing, shrouded in mist and consecrated to the ancient feminine principle. Even as the light of Camelot dimmed, many awaited the return of the King; but the wiser ones listened instead to gentle murmurings whispered seemingly by the mists of Avalon, that Camelot would rise again, but by the power of womanhood.

Camelot was restored to the Club in RY 2003-2004, when knights and maidens ventured forth to serve. They built shelter for the bodies and souls of the poor of Mandaluyong. They taught and enabled others to teach through literacy programs. They brought healing and healers to the afflicted, through medical, ophthalmologic, and dental missions, and wheelchair donations. They planted trees and in so doing, honored the Mother Goddess and future generations of her children.

By day, these champions celebrated their fellowship through badminton and bowling, and by joining the fetes and revelries and campaigns and programs of the District. And on Tuesday nights they assembled by their own round table to celebrate the good they have done and the good they would do in the coming days.

And so it came to pass that as foretold, Camelot was returned to the Club not by a resurgent Arthur but by our own Lady of the Lake, High Priestess of Rotarians, and Bearer of our Holy Grail! Like Morgan le Fay and Guinevere, Star President Rachel embodied true femininity. Hers was strength wrapped in gentle caring. Hers was power cloaked in gracious giving, and a stalwart arm guided by a great heart. Our Camelot lasted for one brief shining moment, and the skies are for now made darker by the passing of this Star.
